Living Like a Local in Crestview, FL
I've lived in Crestview for 41 years. I know which pizza place has the best cauliflower crust, where to put your kayak in the water for a perfect afternoon on the river, and exactly which Friday nights in the summer are worth clearing your calendar for. This isn't a relocation checklist — that's what our Moving to Crestview guide is for. This is what I'd show you if you were my friend and you'd just pulled into town.
Start Downtown — Main Street is Worth Your Time
Crestview's Main Street has had a real glow-up in recent years, and the community has shown up for it. If you want to understand what this city is actually about, spend a Friday evening here during the summer.
Food Truck Fridays bring the whole town out — local vendors, good food, kids running around, people actually talking to each other. It's the kind of thing that sounds simple until you've lived somewhere that doesn't have it, and then you realize how much it matters.
Throughout the year, Main Street is also home to parades, community festivals, and the Triple B — one of those local events that has its own following for good reason. Keep an eye on the community calendar once you're here.
Where to Eat (From Someone Who Actually Lives Here)
I'll skip the chains. Here's where locals go:
Back Home Bakery — on Main Street, and exactly what it sounds like. Go. That's all I'll say.
Helen Back Pizza — get the cauliflower crust. Or the salads. Honestly, order both and figure out which one becomes your regular. Either way you're winning.
These aren't hidden secrets so much as places that earn their reputation every single day. When you move here, these are the spots you'll find yourself recommending to the next person who asks.
Get Outside — Crestview is Surrounded by Water and Wilderness
This is the part that surprises most people who haven't spent time in the Florida Panhandle's interior. You are not lacking for outdoor adventure here.
Twin Hills Park
Right here in Crestview, Twin Hills Park is a local favorite for good reason — trails, open space, and a great spot to get moving without going far.
Kayaking the Blackwater River
The Blackwater River is one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the nation. Its water is dark and tea-colored from naturally occurring tannins that leach from the vegetation along the banks — beautiful and completely clean. Against the white quartz sandbars, it's one of the most visually striking places in Northwest Florida.
Cotton Bridge on Hwy 4 in Baker is my go-to launch point. It's a manageable, scenic paddle with great fishing opportunities along the way if you want to wet a line. Wilderness Landing is another access point on the same river. Pack a lunch, bring a cooler, and don't be in a hurry — that's the only rule.
Shoal River Headwaters State Park — Florida's Newest State Park
This one just opened in early 2026 and I've been excited about it for a long time. Shoal River Headwaters State Park is a 2,480-acre preserve just west of DeFuniak Springs — about 20 minutes from Crestview. Rolling sandy hills, floodplain forests, miles of hiking trails, and wildlife around every corner — deer, turkey, gopher tortoises, and the rare Eastern indigo snake. It's brand new, it's beautiful, and right now it's still uncrowded. Future plans include camping, paddling, and biking. Get there before everyone else figures it out.
More Water — Yellow River & Shoal River
The Yellow and Shoal rivers both border Crestview, with their confluence just south of town. The Shoal River Wayside Park (Bill Duggan Jr. Park) sits just south of Crestview off SR-85 with a boat ramp, pavilions, picnic tables, and a playground. Easy afternoon, zero planning required.
And if you want to go deeper into the forest — Blackwater River State Forest has hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and paddling across one of the largest state forests in Florida.
Schools, Parks & the Stuff You Actually Need to Know
Since I get asked about this constantly: Crestview High School is on the north end of town — home of the Bulldogs. Shoal River Middle School and Antioch Elementary round out the options closest to the heart of Crestview. Always verify current zoning with Okaloosa County School District since boundaries can shift.
Old Spanish Trail Park is another local green space worth knowing about, especially if you have kids or a dog that needs room to run.
