Welcome to Crab Island in Destin, FL—a must-visit Emerald Coast hotspot known for its laid-back atmosphere and vibrant local scene. Whether you’re here to relax on calm waters, enjoy floating attractions, or simply soak in the sun, Crab Island offers something for everyone. When conditions are right—with clear water, jellyfish drifting offshore, and sharks staying in deeper waters—it’s the perfect place to unwind and experience the best of Destin’s aquatic lifestyle.

Today was the ideal day to enjoy Florida sunshine, emerald waters, and great company. Our Crestview Coldwell Banker crew rented a double-decker pontoon boat from Dockside Motorsports in Destin and set off for an unforgettable afternoon at Crab Island—one of the top attractions along the Emerald Coast.

We chose to anchor on the Coast Guard side of Crab Island, which is slightly deeper and less crowded than the main gathering area. This spot was perfect for making use of the two slides on our double-decker boat, giving the kids a fun and safe place to play and splash around in the water.

While the Coast Guard side offers a quieter vibe, it’s important to note that it’s not a designated no-wake zone. Boats and jet skis are free to pass through at speed, so if you’re relaxing on a float, expect a bit of extra movement—a surprise upper-body workout! Still, the beautiful setting and peaceful atmosphere made it more than worthwhile.

Why the Main Area at Crab Island Is Popular

The central section of Crab Island in Destin, FL is known for its no-wake zone status. This makes the water much calmer, ideal for those looking to stand, float, or simply relax without having to constantly adjust.

You’ll also find a variety of Crab Island vendors:

  • Floating restaurants and snack boats

  • T-shirt and souvenir vendors

  • Rental floats and water toys

While the main area has a more festive energy, in our experience, it tends to cater more to an adult crowd, especially during peak season. Families with young children might prefer the quieter edges like where we anchored, depending on personal preference.

Insider Tips for Visiting Crab Island:

  • Arrive early to secure your preferred anchoring spot.

  • Bring sunscreen, water shoes, and flotation devices.

  • Check the tides and weather—Crab Island is best enjoyed at mid- to high-tide for clearer water.

  • Be mindful of wake zones if you have children or are using floating equipment.

  • Watch for wildlife-not just sharks. Watch for jellyfish. They can leave a nasty sting.

Watch for Wildlife — Not Just Sharks

While Crab Island in Destin, FL is generally safe for swimming, always stay aware of local marine life. Besides sharks, jellyfish are common in these waters and can deliver a painful sting if accidentally touched. Keep an eye out, especially during warmer months, and consider wearing water shoes or rash guards for extra protection.

This is what a jelly fish looks like! It’s a nasty sting so steer clear.
